The science of distributed exercise.
Most fitness apps are built around the workout. They assume you have an hour. Most days, you don’t. What follows is the research that says it doesn’t matter.
Exercise snacking is a thing.
In 2022, Islam, Gibala, and Little gave the category a name. “Exercise snacks” — short, intermittent bouts of vigorous activity through the day — produce VO₂max and metabolic improvements comparable to traditional structured training[1]. A 2024 systematic review covering eighteen studies confirmed the effect across populations[3].
You don’t need an hour. You need consistency, intensity, and total volume. The hour is a delivery mechanism; the body responds to the dose.
Frequency outranks duration.
When total weekly volume is matched, training frequency is a stronger predictor of strength adaptation than session length[5]. Practicing a movement six times across the day, light, leaves more long-term residue in the motor cortex than doing the same number of reps in a single block, hard.
This is partially Hebbian learning (neurons that fire together wire together) and partially recovery economics (the cost of one heavy session is non-linear in total volume).
Sitting is the disease.
Interrupting prolonged sitting with two-to-five-minute activity bouts improves postprandial glucose response and is associated with reduced all-cause mortality in observational cohorts[6]. The signal is not the workout. It’s the rhythm.
